Dark Skies

I let the moon shine on me. Pleased to have the choice of this annoyance. Lighting up my face as I lay under the covers. Here in this place its powers not weakened by the artificial lights of humanity. Birds free to use the stars to help navigate their thousand mile migrations. No compass or road map needed as the magnetic field of the earth and the stars in the sky guide them over mountains, valleys, and across the deserts they fly over. Those same skies that guided their parents and grandparents. Distanced from cities and expanding suburbia lit up while their occupants sleep. As I close my eyes with the light of the moon resting on the side of my face I think “This is how it’s supposed to be."
